What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional kindergarten, sometimes referred to as TK, is a publicly funded program for 4-year-olds who turn 5 between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2. Transitional kindergarten is designed to be a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. Children who are enrolled in transitional kindergarten can enroll in traditional kindergarten classes the following year. Although there is no mandated curriculum, transitional kindergarten is modeled on a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Districts and schools have flexibility with how to implement curriculum, but the California Department of Education states that transitional kindergarten is meant to closely follow guidelines in the California Preschool Learning Foundations developed by the department. Districts are expected to use those guidelines as a foundation for instruction. |
Mrs. RussoHello, my name is Megan Russo and I am excited to be a part of the Kennedy STEM Academy team! It's going to be a fun year full of lots of learning and new adventures.
I was born and raised in Artesia, California and actually attended Kennedy myself. From Kennedy I went to Ross, then Cerritos High school. After high school, I moved to Long Beach where I attended Long Beach City College then transfered to Cal State University Long Beach. At CSULB I earned a B.A in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Credential. My passion for TK was so great that I later earned a Transitional Kindergarten certificate and a Masters Degree in Education with a Special Emphasis in Transitional Kindergarten from the University of La Verne. Needless to say, I am highly interested in Early Childhood Development and love the Transitional Kindergarten program. I have been married to my Boston born husband for six years. We recently had the most amazing little baby girl named Emilia Rae. She coincidentally was born in October and will also be a TK student one day. This is my seventh year teaching Transitional Kindergarten at Kennedy and I couldn't be happier. It is an honor to lay the academic foundation for children and foster their love for learning. I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year! |
